Food Photography

Food photography is used to create visually appealing photos of food. It falls under commercial photography because it is used mainly in advertisements, magazines, packaging, and menus. Below are some tips on how to get yummy looking food photographs!

Tip #1: Choose Your Angle

Think of the size, shape, and height of the food to determine what angle to use. Place the camera depending on where it’ll best highlight the qualities of the food.

Tip #2: Foreground and Background

Make use of the empty spaces by surrounding the main food item with ingredients or props that relate to it. Placing items such as tins, jars, herbs, glasses, fabrics, or cooking utensils can speak to the origin of the dish or be used to describe the season of it.

Placing these props will help add to the photo by giving it a more story type feel rather than just a picture of food.

Tip #3: Lighting

It’s important to use natural light when taking photos of food because it will make the food look more natural and less staged. Using a diffuser also helps soften direct light from the sun. You can also use white or black cards to help highlight light in any shadow areas, which will add more detail to the photo.
